from the epicenter of Everglades local culture .... to the heart of Fakahatchee swamp
half on paved roads, half on dirt roads
From Everglades City, we will cycle paved roads for 7 miles, including Hwy 29 (wide shoulder) to Fakahatchee; then cycle on Janes
Scenic Dr (narrow dirt road) into Fakahatchee swamp. Recommend tires at least 1.5 inch wide.
Official route will turn around after 6 miles on dirt road at "K-2", and return to Everglades City via same route.
Local guide will accompany 27-mile route. Pace will be leisurely, with some stops to highlight nature.
for
a shorter ride:
a) turn around after only a few miles on the dirt road (don't cycle all the way to K-2).
b)
OR start/end your bicycle ride at Fakahatchee headquarters (where dirt road begins);
join the off-road group, with guide, as they ride on Janes Scenic Dr. to K-2. NOTE: registration and lunch for all riders is located in
Everglades City
for
a longer ride:

also ride northern half of Janes Scenic Dr.

also ride dirt/mud road of East Main tram to cabin

e) start early at 8:00 am with main group and cycle paved Hwy 41 spur to Turner
River, then Hwy 29 to Janes Scenic Dr. (additional 12 miles; supported by SAG)

after return to Everglades City, also ride paved road to Chokoloskee Island
(additional 8 miles; supported by SAG)

current conditions on Janes Scenic Dr (April 2, 2011):
First several miles through prairie: hard-pack limerock base, with areas of loose stones on surface.
Elsewhere (through cypress swamp): hard-pack limerock (relatively smooth) with occasional gravel
stones, and frequent shallow pot-holes.
