Frequently Asked Questions
about the River of Grass Greenway (ROGG)
1. What is the alignment of the ROGG? Will the greenway be on the north or south side of U.S. 41 (Tamiami Trail)? How much distance will separate the greenway from U.S. 41?
Alignment will be determined later. However, due to environmental concerns, it is likely the ROGG will be close to U.S. 41. As we study each mile of the ROGG, we will look for opportunities to pull farther away from U.S. 41.
Being farther away from Hwy 41 is more pleasurable for recreationists, but potentially more problematic for environmental concerns.
Some of the ROGG will likely be in FDOT right-of-way for U.S. 41.
In the eastern portion of ROGG, in Dade County, there is a possibility of the ROGG being located on dikes maintained by the South Florida Water Management District. The ROGG will very likely be co-located on proposed bridge sections of U.S. 41 in Dade County, as part of the “Replumbing of the Everglades” restoration project.
2. Will the surface be paved?
Construction material will be determined later. We are proposing a smooth, hard surface suitable for road bicycles, wheelchairs, roller-blades, etc. More research will be done to decide on optimal materials, balancing many considerations: smoothness of surface, durability/maintenance, cost-effectiveness, minimizing impact to environment, non-flammable (wildfire-friendly), etc.
